There are many reasons why someone may want to find someone. You may want to find someone who owes you money or an old friend that you lost touch with. The term that is used to depict the practice of locating a person is called skip tracing. This word is derived from the term “to skip town” and while skip tracing, you are tracking the person who “skipped town”. The person who does this task is called a skip tracer.

Skip tracing is a procedure that is used for many reasons and by many people including debt collectors, private investigators, lawyers, journalists and police detectives. For the purpose of this article we will talk about skip tracing as it relates to debt collectors.

Debt collectors use skip tracing to locate people who have not paid debts owed to a company. A lot of the times, the people who run up the debts are fully aware that they are in the wrong and will do anything to avoid being found by the people they owe money to including changing their address and changing their telephone number. But with a little research and persistence, almost anyone can be found and that is where the skip tracer comes in.

In order to have a successful skip trace, one must collect a lot of information about the person they are looking for. This may mean visiting former neighbours, talking to past employers and talking to other people who may be in contact with the person. Phone number databases, credit reports and public tax information may also be used to track the location of the person. The information gathered needs to then be analyzed and verified.

In recent times, the internet has become a powerful and valuable tool for debt collectors and skip tracers due to the fact that you can find just about anything you want online including people. The internet is a wealth of information and information can be found in many places such as online telephone directories, free and paid online databases and social networking sites. A lot of information can be found about someone if you search in the right places and add this online information to the information you found offline and you are almost guaranteed to find who you are looking for and have a successful skip trace.

Skip tracing is an important part of debt recovery and when the person being sought can no longer be contacted, it is to the advantage of the debt collectors to have someone perform a skip trace on that person to locate them and continue the collection process. There are plenty of agencies out there supply skip tracers for a fee that may be worth it in the end if the debt that needs to be collected is a particularly large sum.
