Graphics Cards Add Extra Functions

Graphics cards are also known as video cards or video adapters. These cards are expansion cards that are inserted into a computer’s motherboard to add functions to a computer.

The first ones were introduced with the first personal computer from IBM in 1981. In 1995, two dimensional and three dimensional cards became available for computer games and other visual needs. They add functions such as video capture, TV- tuner, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 decoding, high speed communication, light pen, TV output, or to connect multiple monitors.

They are used for computers at home, work, and businesses patronized by consumers. Grocery stores use these to display the items and prices on the computer screen for the consumer to view. A pen-sized pointer or light pen is used by the consumer to choose appropriate credit card information on a touch screen.

They are also used for televisions with plasma screens or high definition. These cards also connect DVD players, video recorders, and video game consoles. Even video projectors use them.

They last a long time but can wear out over time like anything electronic. They can also become damaged from overheating which would require sooner replacement.

These cards utilize an abundance of electricity. This electricity is converted into heat which can damage the cards if the excess heat is not filtered out. Internal aids are required to prevent them from overheating. Heat sinks use heat-attracting metal such as aluminum or copper to remove the heat from them. A cooling fan is also utilized with the heat sink to release the converted heat.

A water block can be used instead of a heat sink. The block is hollow inside, uses water instead of metal, and does not require a cooling fan. By pumping water through the hollow block, heat is absorbed by the water which is then cooled in a radiator. This method is much more effective to prevent overheating of these cards than a heat sink and cooling fan.

Numerous advances in technology have enabled consumers to enjoy modern electronics products such as DVD players, plasma televisions, and high-tech computer games. Even businesses are finding more and more uses for these devices to make interaction with consumers quicker and more efficient. Only time will tell what technological advances will be seen in the future to meet the ever changing needs of consumers and businesses.
